How “Deep” the “Deep Learning” is?

Artificial Intelligence (AI): The discipline of making analytical machines intelligent, enabling an entity to function appropriately and with foresight in its environment.

Machine Learning: Techniques for learning and performing cognitive functions (examples include algorithms for supervised and unsupervised learnings)

Deep Learning: A statistical machine-learning approach based on deep neural networks that attempt to mimic brain architecture for learning.

Potential Applications of Deep Learning:
  1. Banking – A bank wants to analyze large volumes of video footage from the ATM Machines to detect abnormal activity. Deep Learning techniques can be used to extract images from video footage and identify normal and suspicious or fraudulent activities.
  2. Insurance – An insurance company wants to be able to compute claims costs directly from images. A deep learning system can be trained to take all accident images to classify the accidents by severity of damage and the parts that were damaged.
  3. Healthcare – A diagnostic lab wants to automatically identify potential abnormalities in new images. Once trained, a deep learning system can analyze large volumes of image data (x-ray images, MRI scans, etc.) and categorize them as normal images or one of many categories of abnormal images.
  4. Automotive -  An auto manufacturer wants to automatically identify various brand attributes like ‘stylishness’ of the car, roominess of the interior, etc. They can build a deep learning system that can be trained to recognize the different makes of cars, their aerodynamic shapes and potentially rate new concept design for different brand attributed.
  5. Government – The intelligence agency of a government wants to build a deep learning system that can detect and categorize different types of cyber-attacks. They can train the system using the large volumes of existing intrusions to learn and categorize different patterns of cyber-attacks.

There are many more applications were deep learning is widely used and adopted by the various organization. Few of those are:
  1. Automatic speech recognition
  2. Image recognition
  3. Visual art processing
  4. Natural language processing
  5. Drug discovery and toxicology
  6. Customer relationship management
  7. Recommendation systems
  8. Bioinformatics
  9. Mobile advertising
  10.  Image restoration

In this blog, we saw that what is Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning & Deep Learning is & which industries are using Deep learning for their problem-solving issues. We also saw few most sought out applications of Deep learning that are used commonly for making life more secure and less vulnerable. But this is not the end, the technology has just come, and it has to go far beyond the human mind.
